Web news: Webcasters pay out the nose, YouTube pays users

Web broadcasters' appeal against a recent royalty hike has failed, Variety reports. They've got until May 15 to pay up back royalties at new rates that, as previously reported, may run some of them out of business.

YouTube will soon start allowing its users to make money through short ads tacked onto uploaded clips. Variety says the money will be split 50-50—might this inspire a viral-video gold rush?
