Wednesday’s Maron season finale will also be the series finale

Great, as if Marc Maron needs another thing to have a complex about. As its parent network IFC tweeted earlier today, the season-four finale of Maron will also serve as a series finale:

But Maron—who made the surprise announcement on the newest episode of his podcast, WTF With Marc Maron, which was released earlier today—seems fine with it. “I’ve decided that this is it. It’s done,” Maron said on the podcast. “There’s ways to do more, but this was the vision. This season was the season. And I couldn’t be more thrilled about how it came out, how all four seasons came out. I think you’ll see that we wrapped the story up in the best way possible, and I just feel like it’s done. And I’m thrilled about it.”

Thanking his crew and IFC for giving him creative control over the show, he said, “I don’t see any reason to keep going. I don’t have to … Why take a good thing and make it garbage just because you can?” He adds that he’s proud of the show, he thinks fans will be satisfied by the finale, and that “I’m happy not to be desperate, and not beholden to that desperation.” No word yet on when Maron’s signature paralyzing guilt and accompanying regret will set in.

The two-episode series finale of Maron will air on IFC this coming Wednesday, July 13, at 9 p.m.
