Weekend Box Office

A sizable sophomore slump wasn’t enough to keep Tyler Perry’s Madea Goes To Jail from taking the top spot at the box office for the second weekend in a row. Despite suffering a nearly 60 percent decline since it opened last weekend, Madea beat out the competition to take No. 1 with a modest $16.5 million.

Not that the film had much in the way of competition. Only two new films opened in wide release this week, both of them in roughly half the number of theaters as Madea. Disney’s tween-baiting Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience took No. 2 with $12.7 million despite opening in 800 fewer theaters, though the film’s gross was aided by higher 3D ticket prices. The week’s other new release, Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-Li, hobbled into the No. 8 position with a meager $4.65 million.

Totals were down across the board, with the exception of Slumdog Millionaire, which unsurprisingly saw another bump in both screens and ticket sales in the wake of its near-sweep of the Oscars last Sunday. The film’s $12.15 million take both pushed it up to No. 3, its highest position since opening in wide release 10 weeks ago, and took it well past the $100 million mark.

Taken posted the smallest drop in the top 10, bumping down just 12 percent to No. 4 with $9.95 million in its fifth week. Coraline, on the other hand, took a sizable tumble down to No. 7 from No. 2, with a mere $5.25 million. He’s Just Not That Into You and Paul Blart: Mall Cop have lodged themselves comfortably in the chart’s midsection, landing at No. 5 with $5.88 million and No. 6 with $5.6 million, respectively. Confessions Of A Shopaholic and No. 9 with $4.49 million and Fired Up at No. 10 with $3.8 million round out the top 10.
