Weekend Box Office

Bad reviews and a pirated copy surfacing online weeks back didn’t stop Wolverine from kicking off the summer movie season with a bang: The X-Men prequel/spinoff easily took the top spot with $87 million, which is in line with the opening grosses of the rest of the franchise. (It falls between the last installment, X-Men: The Last Stand, which opened huge with $102.7 million, and X-2: X-Men United, which bowed with $85.6 million—though ticket prices have gone up around 20 percent since then.

The Matthew McConaughey/Jennifer Garner romantic comedy Ghosts Of Girlfriends Past held it down for the female demographic, landing solidly but not spectacularly at No. 2 with $15.33 million. That bumped last week’s top earner, Obsessed, down to No. 3 with $12.2 million, and 17 Again down a spot to No. 4 with $6.36 million. Monsters Vs. Aliens takes the Top 10 longevity award, earning another $5.8 million and moving up a place to No. 5 in its sixth week. The Soloist continues its disappointing box-office run, dropping to No. 6 with $5.6 million. The Robert Downey Jr./Jamie Foxx drama has yet to cross the $20 million mark. The Disney documentary Earth took No. 7 with $4.18 million, just inching out Fighting, which plummeted five spots to No. 8 with $4.17 million in its second week. Hannah Montana The Movie held up well in its fourth frame, landing at No. 9 with $4.08 million, and State Of Play rounded out the top 10 with $3.66 million.
