Weekend Box Office: Crazy Rich Asians is the most successful studio rom-com in nearly a decade

Labor Day weekend’s always been a good one for catching up on the movies you missed, and, with only the flimsy Nazi drama Operation Finale and so-so sci-fi flick Kin as competition, it’s little surprise that Crazy Rich Asians, The Meg, and Mission: Impossible—Fallout continued their reign over late summer cinema. Crazy Rich Asians, Jon M. Chu romantic comedy that’s already made history with its minuscule second week drop, continues its hot streak by surpassing its second week gross to take in a total of $28.3 million. As The Hollywood Reporter notes, its cumulative $117 million makes it the most successful studio romantic comedy in nearly a decade at the U.S. box office.

The Meg and Mission: Impossible—Fallout, which landed in second and third place, respectively, also pulled in strong showings, the latter of which surpassed the $200 million mark. That already makes it more of a cash cow than 2015's Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, which clocked in at roughly $195 million in U.S. box offices. Fallout, which is in its sixth week, also made an unlikely move upward, reclaiming the number three slot from The Happytime Murders, which saw its audience fall by half after last week’s opening—an unsurprising turn considering its tepid critical reception and buckets of puppet jizz. Behind Fallout is Operation Finale, though John Cho’s buzzworthy Searching, which just expanded to 1,200 screens after a strong limited release, nipped at its heels, falling just $150,000 shy of Operation Finale’s $7.8 million.
