Weekend Box Office: Iron Man, duh

Iron Man treated the competition to a hearty spanking this weekend, kicking off the summer blockbuster season with $100.75 million, nearly double the receipts of the rest of the top 10 combined and the 10th-biggest opening weekend of all time. Start making your sequel predictions now. (Note: Even though Iron Man hit many theaters Thursday evening, these numbers reflect the Friday-to-Sunday period only.)

The No. 2 spot went to My Best Friend's Wedding 2, er, Made Of Honor, the only other major-studio release this weekend. The Patrick Dempsey romantic comedy took a respectable $15.5 million, despite showing on about 1,400 fewer screens than Iron Man. Last week's top earner, Baby Mama, took the No. 3 spot, while Forgetting Sarah Marshal retained its No. 4 position, knocking Harold And Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay down to No. 5. The rest of the lineup is pretty familiar, though Horton Hears A Who! fell out of the top 10 for the first time since it opened eight weeks ago.
