Weekend Box Office: Kutcher defeats Kutcher

Ashton Kutcher in animated form defeated flesh-and-blood Ashton Kutcher at the box office this weekend. Open Season the debut feature of Sony Picture Animation earned $23 million this weekend, topping The Guardian's $17.7 million take. In the former, Kutcher plays a deer sidekick to an animated Martin Lawrence. In the latter he plays a wetsuit-wearing sidekick to Kevin Costner's Coast Guard rescue diver. It is unclear at this time if this represents a widespread preference for Kutcher vehicles in which Kutcher doesn't appear or how much the box office for Open Season was boosted by aging indie rock fans turning out to hear new Paul Westerberg songs.

The rest of the weekend shook out more or less as expected. Jackass Number Two took the third slot with $14 million. America's non-love affair with Jon Heder movies in which he doesn't play Napoleon Dynamite continued with School For Scoundrels, which took $9.1 million to land in fourth place. Rounding out the top five: Jet Li's Fearless the martial artist's reported swan song to to kung-fu.

Two other films The Last King Of Scotland and The Queen had strong debuts in limited release.
