Weekend Box Office: Ocean's Thirteen cashes out

Returning to the well for the third (and presumably final) time, the gang behind Ocean's Thirteen enjoyed an opening comparable to the last entry, losing little momentum despite following up a sequel that few people liked. At $37 million, Steven Soderbergh's breezy heist film cruised into first place with little competition from its rivals, including second-place finisher Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End, which dropped another 51% in its third weekend for a $21.3 million total. In contrast, the well-liked Judd Apatow comedy Knocked Up only lost 35% of its opening weekend business for a $20 million total, suggesting that it has the legs to stick around most of the summer. The week's other openers were far from disastrous, but didn't fare especially well: The latest CGI animated movie with celebrity-voiced animals, Surf's Up, took in a modest $18 million for fourth place while the horror sequel Hostel Part II netted $8.75 million, which was good enough for sixth.

In limited release, a pair of Fox Searchlight movies, Waitress and Once, continued to maintain their sleeper hit status, with the former breaking into the Top 10 overall and the latter expanding with a still-healthy $5500 per-screen-average. Opening on eight screens, the Edith Piaf biopic La Vie En Rose had a robust $21,000 per-screen-average.
