After all the Iron Man-induced excitement and big box-office numbers the past couple of weeks, this weekend provided a come-down, with the heavily touted The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian taking the top spot with a not-so-great $56.6 million. While those numbers alone are nothing to scoff at, the Disney sequel failed to match its predecessor's (The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe) $65.6 million opening take from 2005–unusual for a big-name franchise, and considering it opened in over 300 more theaters than the original. Additionally, numbers were down across the board this week, with overall grosses trailing the same weekend last year by a substantial 27 percent.
Predictably, Iron Man continued to chug along with a $31.2 million take, dropping it down to No. 2. What Happens In Vegas also dropped a spot (despite early reports, the rom-com actually took the No. 2 spot last week, besting Speed Racer), with $13.9 million. Meanwhile, Speed continued its prolonged crash-and-burn, plummeting nearly 59 percent with $7.6 million. So far, the Wachowskis' candy-colored seizure machine hasn't yet managed to crack the $50 million mark worldwide–nowhere near its $100 million-plus budget.
The rest of the top 10 was rounded out by the usual suspects: Baby Mama at No. 5 ($4.6 million), Made Of Honor at No. 6 ($4.5 million), Forgetting Sarah Marshall at No. 7 ($2.5 million), Harold And Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay at No. 8 ($1.8 million), The Forbidden Kingdom at No. 9 ($1 million), and The Visitor squeaking in at No. 10 with $687,000.
