Weekend Box Office: Sex on top

Female filmgoers (and admit it, a few of you guys, too) turned out in droves this weekend for Sex And The City, which beat out Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull's sophomore-week showing with a $55.7 million take at the box office (an estimated 85 percent of which came from female attendees). Those numbers make Sex the third-highest debut this summer (behind Indy and Iron Man), and the biggest opening ever for a romantic comedy.

Indiana Jones kept on keepin' on in the No. 2 spot with $46 million, but the No. 3 showing from The Strangers far outpaced industry expectations, marking the second-highest debut from a horror film this year, behind April's Prom Night (which debuted during a particularly dreggy week). The horror film's $20.7 million take handily made up its $9 million production cost, and bumped Iron Man down to No. 4 (with a still-respectable fifth-week $14 million). The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian fell to No. 5 with $13 million, which puts it on track for a final take of about half of its predecessor, The Lion, The Witch, And The Wardrobe's $292 million take.
