Weekend Box Office: Welcome to The Jungle Book

Finally, the citizens of Earth can emerge from their bunkers as the epic battle of Batman V. Superman V. Melissa McCarthy appears to be coming to a close. Just one week later, a new undisputed king of the Hollywood jungle has arrived: The Jungle Book debuted at No. 1 this weekend with a staggering $103.6 million domestic box-office haul, spurred on by positive reviews—The A.V. Club’s was one of the less rapturous, actually—the A-list voice cast, and some admittedly pretty impressive CGI.

It’s doing even better at the all-important international box office, and is expected to cross the $300 million mark later today. That’s a benchmark another talking-animal movie, Zootopia, crossed this weekend in its fifth week of release. (Could this bode well for Kevin Spacey’s talking cat movie, Nine Lives, due this summer? Probably not, but one can dream.)

The Jungle Book pulled in more than five times the amount of its closest competitor, Barbershop: The Next Cut, which came in at No. 2 with $20 million thanks to the apparently literally ageless appeal of Cedric the Entertainer in old-man makeup. Further down the charts, we have the newly demoted The Boss at No. 3, followed by Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice, which was left crying “Martha” at No. 4 with $9 million, a 61 percent drop from last week.

In limited release, meanwhile, another bloody confrontation was unfolding as Jeremy Saulnier’s punks-vs.-Nazi-skins thriller Green Room debuted with $91,000 on only three theater screens. (It expands nationally on April 29.) That’s more than ten times the per-theater average of another new thriller, Criminal, which came in at No. 6 with $5.9 million on 2,683 theater screens, further delaying the Cost-newal Hollywood seems to want so desperately. Also bloody and beleaguered in wide release was the first-person action movie Hardcore Henry, which dropped from No. 5 to No. 11 with a dismal $1.48 million, or $492 per theater. Guess people really would rather stay home and play video games than go out and watch one.
