The same week James Cameron’s Avatar blazed past Titanic as the top-grossing movie of all time worldwide with over $1.85 billion in receipts, it cruised to the #1 spot for the seventh week straight, earning $30 million over the three-day frame. (The drop-off per week has been consistently around 15%, which is virtually unheard of in an age where blockbusters regularly slip 50-60% after opening weekend.) With $595 million cumulative in North America, that puts it only $6 million away from topping Titanic as the all-time domestic grosser, which should happen in a few days. Once again, the newcomers were left to fight for second place, a battle won in this case by the Mel Gibson thriller Edge Of Darkness, which posted a modest comeback for the embattled actor at $17 million. The Kristen Bell rom-com When In Rome got the bronze with a paltry $12 million, but that isn’t such a bad number in relation to the apocalyptic reviews it received.
Not much happening on the limited release front, with the Steve Buscemi-starrer Saint John Of Las Vegas collecting a solid $11,200 on two screens despite mixed notices.
