Netflix both renews and ends Avatar: The Last Airbender

While the rest of the television world fights in the great streaming wars, it looks like Aang will actually be able to complete his. Netflix announced today that it would be renewing Avatar: The Last Airbender—its live-action adaptation of the beloved, animated Nickelodeon show from the early-aughts—for two more seasons. The kicker is that its third season will also be its last, in order to “bring The Legend of Aang to its proper conclusion,” per a press release from the streamer. Read More

House Of The Dragon is returning sooner than expected

It’s been nearly two years since we last saw the silver-haired weirdos of House Targaryen cause mischief and kiss their blood relatives, and every day since then, the Freefolk of television viewers have prayed for more. The Many-Faced God has heard you. Deadline reports that House Of The Dragon will return to HBO and Max this June. Read More

John Mulaney’s ex-wife, Anna Marie Tendler, is releasing a memoir of her “heartbreak and rage”

We try our best, ’round these parts, not to label artists and creators strictly on the basis of who their spouses or former spouses are—even when the significant others in question are objectively more famous to the wider world than the artist in question. But given that writer, makeup artist, photographer, and designer Anna Marie Tendler’s upcoming memoir, Men Have Called Her Crazy, is explicitly about, in part, “the endless source of my heartbreak and rage—men”—and given that the most famous man in Tendler’s life over the last decade has been her ex-husband, stand-up comedian John Mulaney—it’s kind of hard not to view news of the book’s upcoming publication in that light. Queer Eye reportedly a pretty toxic place to work, partly due to Jonathan Van Ness’ “rage issues”

It seems like things were far from fabulous behind the scenes of Netflix’s feel-good hit, Queer Eye. This might not come as a total shock to fans who followed either the recent, extremely sudden departure of design expert Bobby Berk or reports of carjacking and other crimes plaguing the set of their most recent season in New Orleans. But the severity of the issue, specifically as it relates to grooming expert and internet personality Jonathan Van Ness, is troubling, to say the least. Read More

Zack Snyder thinks more people saw Rebel Moon than Barbie, so let’s see if he’s right

Joe Rogan’s podcast is not generally an accurate representation of… reality (you could just glance at the caliber of his usual guests to know that), but filmmaker Zack Snyder appeared on the show this week and dropped a curiously bold claim: According to him, Netflix’s whole distribution model is so “crazy” that he thinks more people have probably seen his movie Rebel Moon—Part One: A Child Of Fire than Barbie (when it was in theaters)—due to Netflix’s ubiquity and the fact that you can just throw something on without having to go out to a theater and buy a separate ticket. Denis Villeneuve vows to never release deleted Dune: Part Two scenes

While the experience of seeing Dune: Part Two in theaters has been compared to the release of The Two Towers or even The Return Of The King, Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic differs from its predecessors in a major way. (It’s not just all that sand.) Don’t expect your post-home-release, five-hour Part One and Part Two marathon to suddenly expand to seven hours with a bunch of spliced-in deleted scenes or other “extended edition”-style edits. Steven Spielberg selects favorite score frequent collaborator John Williams has composed for him

Often, the “Original Score” category is a little too niche for the average moviegoer to be invested in, but some scores are so iconic that they seep deeply into the cultural consciousness. Everybody recognizes the theme from Jaws, or Indiana Jones, or Star Wars, or Harry Potter, or Jurassic Park—and those are just a small sampling of 54-time Oscar nominee John Williams’ body of work. (If he wins on Sunday, Williams will become the oldest Oscar winner ever at 92.) Given the sheer volume of musical scores Williams has created, it might be difficult to choose a favorite, but for his frequent collaborator Steven Spielberg, the choice is easy. Read More

The trailer for The People’s Joker is finally here, and no lawyers can stop you from seeing it

A lot of media has promoted itself as “the thing they don’t want you to see,” but The People’s Joker probably deserves that label more than most. Comedian Vera Drew started crowdfunding the project years ago, pitching it as a trans retelling of Todd Phillips’ The Joker. Despite those obviously parodic origins, the film almost immediately faced some rights issues when Drew tried to premiere it at the Toronto International Film Festival, eventually leading to Drew scrapping an entire planned festival run. It was all apparently in the name of ensuring that the film could someday get screened in theaters and then released to the public, and—sucks to be you, Gotham City—that’s finally happening.
