Weekend Update returns to help us wade through all the summer news
Here’s what’s up in the world of television for Thursday, August 10. All times are Eastern.
Top pick
Weekend Update: Summer Edition (NBC, 9 p.m.): So much is happening in the world of news every single day this summer: Special Counsel Robert Mueller is impaneling a grand jury, Trump still tweets straight-up gibberish, and White House staff members rotate in and out at a head-spinning pace. You can’t blame Weekend Update hosts Colin Jost and Michael Che for itching to get back into the thick of it. Sure, Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee, Seth Meyer, and John Oliver have been doing a tremendous job covering current events with a perceptive yet humorous slant. But for those who have trouble staying up late, this version of Weekend Update is headed toward prime time for the next four weeks, which hopefully will get us through until SNL can take over properly in the fall—although god only knows what else will have transpired by then. Our SNL and late-night news correspondent, Dennis Perkins, is on the case.
Regular coverage
Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later (Netflix)
The Mist (Spike, 10 p.m.)
Zoo (CBS, 10 p.m.)
Wild card
Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen (Bravo, 11:15 p.m.): Here’s an example of just how weird the world’s gotten: We’re used to seeing Real Housewives stars like Brandi Glanville and Ramona Singer on Andy Cohen’s dishy Watch What Happens Live, complete with guest celebrity bartenders. But this week, Andy’s guests include [checks notes]: yep, Kate Beckinsale and Oscar winner Jeff Bridges. Will he only drink White Russians? We might have to tune in just to find out.
