Weezer is set to release a new album, the unimaginatively (or self-referentially) titled The White Album, on April 1, so the band has been teasing its arrival with nondescript Instagram posts. Oh, and the release of some of the album’s tracks, including “Thank God For Girls,” for which the band also made a cannoli-stuffed video. In a purported attempt to make “hump day” more tolerable, the band has just released another new song, which is surprisingly (for latter-day Weezer) not just titled “Hump Day”.
The new track, “LA Girlz,” premiered exclusively on Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio program, and is a pleasant throwback to The Blue Album, with Wall Of Sound-like production values, sweeping guitars, and the familiar sense of longing in the lyrics. Frontman Rivers Cuomo implores these “LA Girlz” to act their age, while suggesting “they sweeten up their lemonade” and also talking about the kids being put to bed, so it’s kind of hard to tell what exactly he’s after. But the cooed refrain, “Does anybody love anybody as much as I love you, baby?,” tugs so hard on the nostalgic heart strings, we can almost overlook the seeming contradiction. “LA Girlz” is more a return to form than innovation, but maybe the most we can expect from new Weezer music is its resemblance to old Weezer music.
