Weird Al and the Lonely Island guys are having a lot of fun in this Carpool Karaoke trailer
Of the glut of “Hey, celebrities are just regular folks, too!” talk show segments—and the actual TV series that they apparently inevitably inspire these days—few have the primal kick of James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke.” Based as it is in our shared urge (dating back millions of years) to sing in cars, the segment/show goes a long way toward humanizing whoever climbs into its fleet of fake SUVs to hum along.
Of course, some stars start out more human than others; take, for instance, “Weird Al” Yankovic, who’s built a reputation over the last 40 years not just for his prowess as a parodist and a musician, but also for being, by all accounts, a really swell guy. So it’s extra fun to see him hop into the passenger seat for a just-released episode of Apple’s series version of Carpool Karaoke, complete with the Lonely Island guys as his drivers.
The full-length Carpool Karaoke includes a bunch of extra sketches and bits to pad out its run time, but really, the best parts of this trailer are the core of the experience: Watching Al, Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Shaffer have fun rapping along to “Amish Paradise,” just like we may or may not have done 6,000 times as kids, much to our parents’ dismay.
