Wendi McLendon-Covey and Kal Penn join teen comedy Speech And Debate
Being a teenager is hard. You’ve got all these new emotions, you’ve got hair in places where there was no hair before, your parents just don’t understand, and you’re too young to get references to late-’80s hip hop music. Also, sometimes you have to get your friends together and resurrect your high school’s long-dead speech and debate club in order to expose the hypocrisy of the people in charge. That’s how Deadline describes the premise of Stephen Karam’s play Speech And Debate, at least, which director Dan Harris is going to adapt into a feature film.
Deadline also says that Wendi McLendon-Covey (The Goldbergs, Reno 911) and Kal Penn (Harold And Kumar, the Obama administration’s Associate Director Of The Office Of Public Engagement) will appear in the Speech And Debate film. McLendon-Covey will be playing the mother of one of the main kids, and Penn will be a schoolboard member who is also a parent of one of the kids.
