Werner Herzog explores the future of sports in an exclusive Lo And Behold... clip

He’s traveled deep into the jungle and to the literal ends of the Earth, stared down the savagery of nature in the Alaskan wilderness, and looked back to the earliest days of human civilization. But for his new movie, Lo And Behold, Reveries Of The Connected World, Werner Herzog is turning away from the natural world and exploring its opposite: The virtual world of the internet.

The A.V. Club is premiering an exclusive clip from the upcoming documentary, which promises an in-depth look at “the ways in which the online world has transformed how virtually everything in the real world works.”

In this particular case, it’s the real world of sports, as a scientist excitedly shows off the soccer-playing robots he and his colleagues at Carnegie Mellon predict will be able to defeat the FIFA world champions by 2050. Playing off of his subject’s giggly enthusiasm, the ever-philosophical Herzog asks his subject if he loves star player “Robot eight,” to which the researcher replies, “Yes, we do. We do love robot eight.”

Lo And Behold, Reveries Of The Connected World premieres in theaters and on demand on August 19.
