We've got alien punks, robo-ninjas, and a Tiffany Haddish-Kevin Hart team-up in today's trailer happy hour
Welcome back to Trailer Happy Hour, where we line up all the day’s new movie promos, so you can knock them all down in a bare minimum of clicks. Today, we’ve got a human kill-bot, a sad-sack Johnny Galecki,a crew of alien punk rockers, and Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish calling Taran Killam out on his bullshit. So, hey, let’s get right into it.
First up: Hart’s latest buddy comedy, Night School, about a fast-talking grill salesman looking to better himself by getting his GED. The immediate appeal here is Hart facing off with Haddish as his teacher—matching him beat for beat with over-the-top silliness—but we also get appearances from Ben Schwartz and Taran Killam. The latter makes his mark by repeatedly deploying his best “black voice” in conversation, despite the rest of the film’s cast making it clear that it’s a terrible idea. Night School hits theaters on September 28.
If you’re in the mood for a little (or a lot) more violence, meanwhile, we’ve also got a promo for Blumhouse’s latest pulpy action trifle, Upgrade (June 1). Starring Logan Marshall-Green as a dude who gets an AI implanted in his head to help him track down and messily murder the guys who killed his family, the movie looks surprisingly fun, as Marshall-Green just sort of bemusedly watches as his artificially controlled limbs kick the shit out of bad guys. The trailer comes in both green band and red band varieties, too, depending on how many bloody head explosions you were hoping to see today.
Just as violent, if a lot more somber, is Netflix’s latest acquisition, the Martin Freeman-starring zombie flick Cargo. Freeman stars as a desperate father trying to get his baby somewhere safe before the virus in his system turns him into a monster, teaming up with a young woman (Natasha Wanganeen) hoping to find a cure for her own diseased dad. The film debuts on Netflix on May 18.
On the (relatively) lighter side, there’s also Sony’s new horror comedy The Cleanse, about a sad-sack dude (Big Bang Theory’s Johnny Galecki) attempting to expel his very literal demons. With a premise that sounds kind of like a more comedic version of David Cronenberg’s The Brood—and an appearance by a cult-leader-esque Anjelica Huston—the long-delayed feature will finally purge its way into the light of day on May 4.
Finally, there’s A24's adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s short story “How To Talk To Girls At Parties,” which sees a couple of punk naifs wander into a cosmic love story, with Elle Fanning playing the alien weirdo who captures one of the young rocker’s hearts. Directed by Hedwig And The Angry Inch’s John Cameron Mitchell, and featuring Nicole Kidman as some sort of punk rock queen, the film is currently set for a May 18 U.S. release.
