Natalie Portman leads a glossy mystery series, Snowpiercer moves to AMC, and more
Snowpiercer, Omnivore (Photos: AMC, Apple TV+)Welcome to the weekend edition of What’s On. Here are the big things happening on TV from Friday, July 19 to Sunday, July 21. All times are Eastern. [Note: The weekly edition of What’s On publishes on Sundays.]
1. Snowpiercer kicks off its final season
AMC, Sunday, 9 p.m.: The 10-episode last season of Snowpiercer moves from TNT to AMC. Based on Bong Joon-ho’s film, the series reboot also sees passengers trapped in a never-ending train ride in a frozen wasteland. The third-season finale had the passengers splitting up to stay behind with Melanie (Jennifer Connelly) or go with Andre (Daveed Diggs) for a fresh start in New Eden. And the new batch promises to follow up on this cliffhanger and introduce new characters played by the likes of Clark Gregg and Michael Aronov. Snowpiercer debuts at 3:01 a.m. for AMC+ subscribers.
2. Omnivore bites into the crucial topic of how food is made
Apple TV+, Friday, 12:01 a.m.: René Redzepi, the co-owner of popular restaurant Noma (whom you may recognize from this season of The Bear), hosts the thought-provoking eight-parter Omnivore. Each episode of this docuseries unpacks crucial ingredients and how they’ve gone beyond their cultural heritage to become global staples, touching on everything from banana plantations in India and paprika in Serbia to a Louisiana hot-sauce factory.
3. Natalie Portman leads Lady In The Lake
Apple TV+, Friday, 12:01 a.m.: Lady In The Lake, based on Laura Lippman’s 2019 mystery novel, is for fans of melodrama and Natalie Portman (but, fair warning, that’s about it). In this seven-episode series, Portman plays Maddie Morgenstern, a suburban housewife in ’60s Baltimore who leaves her family for a new career as an investigative journalist. She becomes obsessed with solving the murder of Cleo Johnson (Moses Ingram), a Black mother of two who disappears on Christmas Eve. The cast also includes Y’lan Noel, Mikey Madison, Noah Jupe, Byron Bowers, Brett Gelman, and Mike Epps.
4. Get high with Skywalkers: A Love Story
Netflix, Friday, 3:01 a.m.: Nothing says romance like two daredevils climbing to dangerous heights, right? Angela Nikolau and Ivan Beerkus are Moscow-born professional climbers of some of the world’s tallest buildings. Oh, and they’re also a couple. Skywalkers: A Love Story charts their seven-year, six-country journey as their relationship evolves. Check out The A.V. Club‘s review.
5. Love Lies Bleeding hits streaming
Max, Friday, 3:01 a.m.: Rose Glass’ electric romance Love Lies Bleeding makes its way to Max at a time when everyone could use a goddamn break. Kristen Stewart and Katy O’Brian shine in this lesbian neo-noir thriller as a gym manager and boxer who fall in love. It’s too bad that Lou’s (Stewart) estranged father is a notorious criminal, and Jackie (O’Brian) gets caught up in his trap. The cast is rounded out by Ed Harris, Jena Malone, Anna Baryshnikov, and Dave Franco.
