What We Do In The Shadows is what we watch on the Wednesdays

Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Wednesday, March 27. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

What We Do In The Shadows (FX, 10 p.m., series premiere): We’re not sure we need to sell you all that hard on What We Do In The Shadows, FX’s spinoff of Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement’s vampire mockumentary film of the same name. They’re great, it’s great, there’s an “energy vampire” and Beanie Feldstein LARPs. If you need more than that, here you go:

Our own Danette Chavez visited the series’ set and put together this fascinating piece on the series, the cast, Clement and Waititi’s approach, the list goes on. Give it a read, then come back after the excellent series premiere for Katie Rife’s recap.

Regular coverage

Riverdale (The CW, 8 p.m.)
Jane The Virgin (The CW, 9 p.m.): fifth season premiere
You’re The Worst (FXX, 10 p.m.)
Documentary Now! (IFC, 11 p.m.): third season finale

Wild card

The Magicians and Happy! (Syfy, 9 p.m. and 10 p.m.): It’s a good night for weird, genre-bending adaptations, and not just the one featured above. The Christopher Meloni-starring Happy!, an adaptation of the Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson comic book series of the same name, sees the once and former Elliot Stabler navigate the world and solve crimes with the aid of a tiny blue winged unicorn who speaks with the voice of Patton Oswalt. Keep an eye out for Andrea Reiher’s pre-air review.

But we’d be asleep at the wheel if we didn’t inform you that tonight’s The Magicians is a musical episode. This show does that format better than almost any other, and this tiny little teaser has our expectations high.
