5 things to watch on TV this weekend
David Dastmalchian's horror film hits Shudder, Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon sequel drops, and more
Welcome to the weekend edition of What’s On. Here are the big things happening on TV from Friday, April 19 to Sunday, April 21. All times are Eastern. [Note: The weekly edition of What’s On publishes on Sundays.]
1. David Dastmalchian prepares for a Late Night With The Devil
Shudder, Friday, 3:01 a.m.: Late Night With The Devil dares to ask: What would happen if a talk show host got tangled up with the occult on live TV? The answer, obviously, is nothing good. Jack Delroy (David Dastmalchian) is mourning his dead wife while trying to bring up his late-night variety series’ ratings. His Halloween segment with a psychic, Christou (Fayssal Bazzi), goes awry, leading to death and destruction. Here’s a bit from The A.V. Club’s review of the film:
Virtually everything about Late Night With The Devil works, from its sets to its costumes to its casting to its impeccable sound design. It’s a gem on every level, and it’s already a contender for the best new horror film of 2024.
2. Tubi presents a British millennial comedy
Tubi, Friday, 3:01 a.m.: It’s Nicola Coughlan’s time to shine in Big Mood, in which the Derry Girls and Bridgerton star plays Maggie, who faces an identity crisis as she turns 30. Suffering from depression and bipolar disorder, she messes up her career and relationships, particularly with longtime BFF Eddie (Lydia West). After airing in the U.K. on Channel 4, all six episodes drop April 19 on Tubi.
3. The Rebel Moon saga continues with The Scargiver
Netflix, Friday, 3:01 a.m.: Zack Snyder is back at it. Four months after the release of his space sci-fi epic Rebel Moon, the sequel is here. The Scargiver stars Sofia Boutella, Ed Skrein, Djimon Hounsou, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Michael Huisman, Cary Elwes, Charlie Hunnam, Corey Stoll, Staz Nair, and Anthony Hopkins, and it follows up on Kora and her crew’s battle against Atticus Noble for the safety of Veldt, a moon that’s become a harbor for those across the cosmos who have nowhere else to go.
4. Roku adds YA drama The Spiderwick Chronicles
The Roku Channel, Friday, 3:01 a.m.: The Spiderwick Chronicles centers on the Grace family, who move to Maine and into their ancestral home, the Spiderwick Estate. Of course, upon arrival, they realize the mansion harbors secrets, specifically a fantastical world to explore. Christian Slater, Jack Dylan Grazer, Joy Bryant, Noah Cottrell, and Lyon Daniels star.
5. At last, a reality series about a cannabis store is here
Hulu, Saturday, 12:01 a.m.: Executive-produced by Jimmy Kimmel, High Hopes arrives right on time, a.k.a. on 4/20. The show follows the day-to-day of an L.A. dispensary run by Belarus-born brothers Slava and Mishka as they prepare to expand nationwide and launch a high-end cannabis brand.
