6 things you have to watch on TV this weekend
Todd Haynes' May December hits Netflix, Emma Stone hosts SNL, and more
Welcome to the weekend edition of What’s On. Here are the big things happening on TV from Friday, Dec 1 to Sunday, Dec 3. All times are Eastern. [Note: The weekly edition of What’s On publishes on Sundays.]
1. Todd Haynes helms May December
Netflix, Friday, 3:01 a.m.: Todd Haynes’ latest wickedly good film is May December, which comes to Netflix after a limited theatrical release. It follows television star Elizabeth (Natalie Portman), who heads to Georgia to research her next role as Gracie (Julianne Moore), a woman who had a scandalous affair with a young man, Joe (Charles Melton). As Elizabeth gets involved in their lives, it brings long-buried feelings and secrets to the surface. Here’s an excerpt from The A.V. Club’s review:
May December, a prickly story about performance and persuasion, about prejudgments and predation, is a triumph. Its final moments alone will be rattling in the viewer’s head for days, if not years, to come.
2. Emma Stone takes over Saturday Night Live
NBC, Saturday, 11:30 p.m.: Emma Stone is set to join SNL’s five-timers club. The actor, who is currently killing it on Showtime’s unnerving The Curse, hosts the sketch-comedy show, with musical guest Noah Kahan. The A.V. Club’s recap of the night publishes Sunday.
3. The Snoopy Show presents a Christmas special
Apple TV+, Friday, 12:01 a.m.: How can we start December without The Snoopy Show’s holiday special? This one, titled “Happiness Is Holiday Traditions,” finds Snoopy searching for the perfect tree topper and Woodstock getting trapped in a window display.
4. Eddie Murphy leads the holiday movie Candy Cane Lane
Prime Video, Friday, 12:01 a.m.: Directed by Reginald Hudlin, Candy Cane Lane centers on Chris Carver (Eddie Murphy), who is obsessed with winning his neighborhood’s contest for the best-decorated home. He makes a deal with an evil elf, Pepper (Jillian Bell), only to learn she might just unleash misery upon everyone he loves. The cast includes Tracee Ellis Ross, Nick Offerman, Ken Marino, and Robin Thede.
5. The Great British Bake Off ends season 14
Netflix, Friday, 3:01 a.m.: The Great British Bake Off’s 14th season comes to a close on Netflix this Friday. (The episode drops three days after it airs in the U.K., so no peeking online.) Look out for The A.V. Club’s recap just after the sendoff.
6. Power Book III: Raising Kanan is back
Starz, Friday, 8 p.m.: Raising Kanan, a spin-off to Starz’s Power, returns for its third season. Set in 1991, the crime drama follows Kanan (Mekai Curtis) as he learns about the dangers of his mother’s mob business. The cast includes Omar Epps, Joey Bada$$, and Hailey Kilgore, with Tony Danza and Wendell Pierce joining this new batch.
