Welcome to What’s On, our weekly picks of must-watch shows. Here’s what you need to watch from Sunday, January 21 to Thursday, January 25. All times are Eastern. [Note: The weekend edition of What’s On drops on Fridays.]
The biggies
Griselda (Netflix, Thursday, 3:01 a.m.)
Four years after the end of Modern Family, Sofia Vergara is ready for her next challenge with Griselda. The actor leads Netflix’s six-part limited series, playing drug queenpin Griselda Blanco. The show, from the producers of Narcos, focuses on Blanco’s rise to notoriety as a cocaine dealer in Miami in the ’70s and ’80s. The cast also includes Juliana Aidén Martinez, Alberto Guerra, Martin Rodriguez, Vanessa Ferlito, and Karol G. Here’s an excerpt from The A.V. Club’s review:
The limited series attempts to untangle a tenacious, ferocious, and villainous mastermind. It’s compelling, especially thanks to Vergara’s gritty take on playing the “Godmother of Cocaine,” but the whole project also feels a bit like more of the same.
Masters Of The Universe: Revolution (Netflix, Thursday, 3:01 a.m.)
Kevin Smith’s Revolution is a follow-up to his 2021 animated series, Masters Of The Universe: Revelation (which itself is a sequel to the ’80s show He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe). In the new episodes, Teela (Sarah Michelle Gellar) joins forces with He-Man (Chris Wood) and the other Masters to save Eternia from a dark future. The impressive voice cast of this fantasy drama includes Mark Hamill, Stephen Root, Diedrich Bader, Alicia Silverstone, Lena Headey, and Justin Long.
Hidden gems
Jacqueline Novak: Get On Your Knees (Netflix, Tuesday, 3:01 a.m.)
Comedian and actor Jacqueline Novak is bringing her Off-Broadway show to Netflix. Directed by none other than Natasha Lyonne, Get On Your Knees might seem like another raunchy comedy special (there is a lot of talk of blow jobs), but Novak gets surprisingly real in the 90-minute outing. Look out for The A.V. Club’s interview with the comedian this week.
In The Know (Peacock, Thursday, 3:01 a.m.)
Co-created by Mike Judge and Zach Woods (Silicon Valley), In The Know is a six-episode stop-motion comedy with Woods in the lead role. He voices Lauren Caspian, the hypocritical host of a podcast in which he conducts in-depth interviews with the help of a diverse public radio staff. The voice cast includes J. Smith Cameron, Carl Tart, Charlie Bushnell, Caitlin Reilly, and Judge.
More good stuff
Superhot: The Spicy World Of Pepper People (Hulu, Monday, 12:01 a.m.)
Ben Schwartz narrates the 10-episode docuseries Superhot, which delves into the eccentric subculture of people who enjoy eating extremely spicy foods. Expect chats with elite spice growers, folks who experiment with different heat levels, and those who get an adrenaline rush chomping on chilis.
Sexy Beast (Paramount+, Thursday, 3:01 a.m.)
British crime drama series Sexy Beast serves as a prequel to Jonathan Glazer’s 2000 film of the same name. The show is about the complex friendship between thieves Gal Dove (James McArdle) and Don Logan (Emun Elliott), whose bond is threatened when one begins a romance with an adult film star, Deedee (Sarah Greene).
