6 things you have to watch on TV this weekend

Welcome to the weekend edition of What’s On. Here are the big things happening on TV from Friday, January 5 to Sunday, January 7. All times are Eastern. [Note: The weekly edition of What’s On publishes on Sundays.]

1. Jon Hamm takes on animation with Grimsburg

FOX, Sunday, 8 p.m.: Jon Hamm might be menacing folks on FX’s Fargo at the moment, but in the new FOX comedy Grimsburg … well, he’s still a menace, but in a good way. In the animated sitcom, he voices a sleuth named Marvin Flute, who returns to his titular hometown and wreaks havoc on the lives of his loved ones. But it’s all because he finally wants to reconnect with his ex-wife and the son he left behind. The voice cast includes Erinn Hayes, Alan Tudyk, and Rachel Dratch.

2. Dan Levy wants you to cry with Good Grief

Netflix, Friday, 3:01 a.m.: Dan Levy is responsible for one of TV’s sweetest comedies in Schitt’s Creek, but now he’s out to make you weep with his first feature film, Good Grief. Levy plays Marc Dreyfus, who is mourning the deaths of his husband and mother. To try and lift his mood, he travels with his two best friends for a life-changing trip to Paris. Himesh Patel, Ruth Negga, Luke Evans, Celia Imrie, Emma Corrin, and Kaitlyn Dever co-star.

3. Hell yes, RuPaul’s Drag Race is back

MTV, Friday, 8 p.m.: The popular reality competition series RuPaul’s Drag Race returns for its 16th round, in which, yes, 16 talented queens will compete to take home the trophy. This year boasts quite the lineup of judges, including Sarah Michelle Gellar, Kyra Sedgwick, Joel Kim Booster, Ronan Farrow, Kaia Gerber, and Law Roach.

4. Awards season kicks into gear with the Golden Globes

CBS, Sunday, 8 p.m.: Oh, you thought the Golden Globes would vanish after that scandal? Think again, because this is Hollywood we’re talking about. The awards ceremony, which took a one-year break in 2022, continues to live on. This year’s show will be hosted by Jo Koy and is the first since the HFPA disbanded last year. So maybe there’s hope after all? The top film nominees include Barbie, Oppenheimer, Killers Of The Flower Moon, and Poor Things. On the TV side, Succession, The Bear, Only Murders In The Building, and The Crown lead the way. Look out for The A.V. Club’s coverage on Sunday night and Monday morning.

5. Funny Woman makes its way to America

PBS, Sunday, 10 p.m.: In the six-part, ’60s-set British series Funny Woman, Barbara Parker (Gemma Arterton) has just won a pageant. But she knows there’s more to life than being a small-town beauty queen, so she heads to London to take on the male-dominated world of comedy. If this is all reminding you a little bit of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, you’re not alone.

6. It’s time for The Prison Confessions Of Gypsy Rose Blanchard

Lifetime, Friday, 8 p.m.: The case of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, a Munchausen Syndrome By Proxy victim who suffered physical and psychological abuse from her mother, earned national attention (and was the subject of Hulu’s The Act, starring Joey King and Patricia Arquette). She went to prison for her mother’s murder and was released in December after eight years (and now wants to meet Taylor Swift). Lifetime’s six-episode series examines the Blanchard case through extensive interviews conducted with her while she was behind bars.
