6 things to watch on TV this weekend
John Mulaney takes over L.A., Dua Lipa pulls double duty on SNL, Jerry Seinfeld's movie drops, and more
Welcome to the weekend edition of What’s On. Here are the big things happening on TV from Friday, May 3 to Sunday, May 5. All times are Eastern. [Note: The weekly edition of What’s On publishes on Sundays.]
1. Live from L.A., it’s John Mulaney
Netflix, Friday, 10 p.m.: All we know about the mysterious six episodes of John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s In L.A. is that the comedian/actor goes on various adventures in the city with a bunch of famous people. The show premieres live on May 3, with additional outings dropping from May 6 through 10. The impressive roster of guests includes Richard Kind, David Letterman, Nate Bargatze, Jon Stewart, John Carpenter, Cedric The Entertainer, Mae Martin, Jerry Seinfeld, Patton Oswalt, Bill Hader, St. Vincent, Ronny Chieng, Hannah Gadsby, and, er, Marcia Clark, among others.
2. Dua Lipa does it all on Saturday Night Live
NBC, Saturday, 11:30 p.m.: It’s Dua Lipa’s turn to pull double duty on Saturday Night Live. To promote her new album Radical Optimism (out May 3), the singer both hosts and performs on the sketch comedy series. The A.V. Club’s recap of the night publishes on Sunday.
3. Prom Dates sounds like classic YA romance fare
Hulu, Friday, 12:01 a.m.: Kim Nguyen’s coming-of-age film tests the relationships of two BFFS, Hannah (Julia Lester) and Jess (Antonia Gentry). Just a day before prom, they break up with their respective boyfriends and vow to find new dates so their pact of having the perfect night is fulfilled. Zión Moreno, Chelsea Handler, and John Michael Higgins co-star.
4. Get ready for round two of Star Wars: Tales Of The Empire
Disney+, Saturday, 3:01 a.m.: Dave Filoni’s animated Star Wars anthology tackles the POV of two relatively underrated warriors from the Galactic Empire in its second season. After the first round took on Jedis, the six new episodes unpack the lives of Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto) and Jedi Barriss Offee (Meredith Salenger).
5. Now we’re roasting… Tom Brady?
Netflix, Sunday, 8 p.m.: As part of the Netflix Is A Joke comedy festival, Tom Brady is getting roasted by his pals. It’s random, but that seems to be Netflix’s modus operandi nowadays anyway. Among the attendees are host Kevin Hart, Brady’s former head coach Bill Belichick, and players like Randy Moss, Julian Edelman, Drew Bledsoe, and Rob Gronkowski.
6. Pop Tarts’ origin story comes alive in Unfrosted
Netflix, Friday, 3:01 a.m.: Jerry Seinfeld—who recently bitched about comedy culture and how the movie business is dead—directs and stars in a comedy movie. Unfrosted charts the competition between cereal companies Kellogg’s and Post in 1963 when they attempted to reinvent the breakfast pastry with Pop-Tarts. The ensemble features Hugh Grant, Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Jon Hamm, John Slattery, Dan Levy, Bill Burr, Peter Dinklage, Max Greenfield, Maria Bakalova, and Christian Slater.
