6 things you have to watch on TV this weekend
Get ready for star-studded movies on Netflix and Apple TV+, comedian Nate Bargatze hosting Saturday Night Live, and a new South Park special
Welcome to the weekend edition of What’s On. Here are the big things happening on TV from Friday, Oct 27 to Sunday, October 29. All times are Eastern. [Note: The weekly What’s On publishes on Sundays.]
1. Pain Hustlers brings together Chris Evans and Emily Blunt
Netflix, Friday, 3:01 a.m.: Believe it or not, no one in Hollywood has paired Chris Evans and Emily Blunt onscreen until now. Pain Hustlers, a film based on Evan Hughes’ book of the same name, follows Liza Drake (Blunt), who finds herself in a major medical conspiracy after she lands a job at a failing pharmaceutical start-up. Evans plays a slimy drug rep in cast that also includes Catherine O’Hara, Jay Duplass, Andy Garcia, and Brian d’Arcy James. Check out The A.V. Club’s review.
2. All your favorite stars are in the sci-fi film Fingernails
Apple TV+, Friday, 12:01 a.m: Update: Fingernails will release on Apple TV+ on Friday, November 3. It had a theatrical release on October 27.
Directed by Christos Nikau, Fingernails has an impressive ensemble that features Jessie Buckley, Riz Ahmed, Jeremy Allen White, Annie Murphy, and Luke Wilson. The sci-fi romance drama centers on a couple, Anna and Ryan (Buckley and White), who think they’ve found true love. An unsure Anna, however, signs up to join a “love testing institute,” where a man named Amir (Ahmed) throws a wrench in their relationship.
3. South Park presents yet another very special…special
Paramount+, Friday, 3:01 a.m.: In its latest exclusive event, South Park serves up Joining The Panderverse, a special in which the boys are replaced by women of color and ideas like AI and diversity in media are tackled.
4. The Five Nights At Freddy’s adaptation is here
Peacock, Friday, 3:01 a.m.: Based on the popular video-game franchise, Five Nights At Freddy’s is a supernatural horror film that releases in theaters and drops on Peacock on the same day. The film follows Mike Schmidt (Josh Hutcherson), whose gig at a pizza place turns into a nightmare once the animatronic mascots come alive. Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Matthew Lillard co-star.
5. SNL welcomes comedian Nate Bargatze
NBC, Saturday, 11:30 p.m.: In a relatively surprising move for Saturday Night Live, season 49’s third episode is hosted by Grammy-nominated comedian Nate Bargatze (instead of, you know, some very famous person). He’s joined by musical guests Foo Fighters. The A.V. Club’s recap of the episode publishes on Sunday.
6. Start your Halloween weekend with The Enfield Poltergeist
Apple TV+, Friday, 12:01 a.m: The Enfield Poltergeist is a four-part docuseries that delves into the 1977 case of an English family who was seemingly haunted. The project features rare footage and audio as it explores why the occurrence had such an impact.
