Whither Coy? Whither Vance?
In today's mail, the DVD for The Dukes Of Hazzard: The Complete Fifth Season arrived. The cover looked a little weird. It featured Daisy Duke, The General Lee and… nobody else. Then I remembered that the fifth season was the one where Tom Wopat and John Schneider left over a salary dispute. Bo and Luke (who were said to have left to pursue their NASCAR dreams) were replaced by lookalike cousins Coy Duke (Byron Cherry) and Vance Duke (Christopher Mayer). Coy and Vance lasted most of the season, from the episode entitled "Meet The New Dukes" to the oh-so-appropriately named "Welcome Back, Bo 'N' Luke," in which a "sick relative" forced them to leave Hazzard county and exactly the same time Bo and Luke returned from the NASCAR circuit.
Today, according to the IMDB, Cherry now runs a bartending business. Mayer continued to act for years but apparently hasn't had a role since
Liar, Liar. But, in 1982, destiny called and they did not blink. They stepped into thankless roles and did their part. Then they stepped away. Don't they at least rate a photo on the cover?
