Why are we just now finding out that Michael Cera and Aubrey Plaza used to date?
Here at The A.V. Club, we try not to get worked up over the personal lives of celebrities, because it’s harder to make fun of their acting performances or movie choices when we think of them as real people with real feelings. That being said, even stone-hearted cynics like us can sometimes fall into the trap of—blegh—love, like the time we foolishly got invested in in the relationship between Chris Evans and Jenny Slate. Well, it’s happening again, but at least this time the couple has already broken up, mitigating a little bit of our heartbreak.
Apparently, Aubrey Plaza and Michael Cera dated for a year and a half after they appeared in Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World together, and they even drove across the country together and considered getting married in Las Vegas. She’s funny and cool and weird! He’s funny and cool and weird! They’re practically made for each other, and also Scott Pilgrim is a very underrated movie that Chris Evans was also in!
Plaza dropped this love bomb during an appearance on RuPaul and Michelle Visage’s What’s The Tee? podcast (via Vulture), saying she finds Cera “sexy” and that he’s still “very special” to her. “He’s just a weird little freak and we speak the same language,” she says, adding that they’re still good friends. So, while we were robbed of this love story before we even knew about it, at least we all have an opportunity here to reflect on how good the cast of Scott Pilgrim was.
