Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly to play Sherlock Holmes and John Watson

We’re not sure the world needs another take on Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories—what with the Guy Ritchie movies, the BBC show, and the CBS show—but sometimes a movie studio just has to jump on a great idea when it gets the chance. That’s what Sony is apparently doing now, because according to Deadline, it’s moving forward with a film called Holmes & Watson that stars Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as the famous detective and his dutiful sidekick (respectively).

If Step Brothers—the 2008 Ferrell/Reilly classic that has apparently become a weekly tradition on Comedy Central—is anything to go by, though, the actual plot reasons that bring these two guys together isn’t going to be nearly as important as the crazy shenanigans they get into. After all, they also appeared in Talladega Nights, which featured this incredible haunted house conversation on top of its goofy NASCAR drama:

Just take that scene, imagine that Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are playing Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, and you’ll forget all about Benedict Cumberbatch. Whether you’re up for it or not, Holmes & Watson is said to by “inspired by” Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories, and it’ll be directed by Get Hard’s Etan Cohen.
