Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfus team up for a remake of cringe comedy classic Force Majeure

Ruben Östlund’s 2014 dramedy Force Majeure has an instantly hooky, cringe-inducing premise: How does a family move on after their father proves, definitively, that he’d abandon them to save his own ass during an emergency? It’s the sort of painful but recognizable question that easily survives translation, which is presumably why Julia Louis-Dreyfus has been looking to remake Östlund’s festival darling for a while. Now, it sounds like JLD has found the perfect avatar of wounded male ego to star opposite of, with Deadline reporting that Will Ferrell will play the shitty dad/husband in question.

Adding to the potential cinematic tension: Oscar-winning writing team Jim Rash and Nat Faxon, who’ll be stepping up to bring some of that The Descendants awkward heat by co-directing the remake. The script, meanwhile, comes courtesy of Peep Show creator Jesse Armstrong, whose previous contributions to the uncomfortable film canon include Armando Iannucci’s In The Loop and awkward suicide bomber comedy Four Lions.

So, yeah, this thing is probably going to be pretty uncomfortable. Can’t wait!
