Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon are really excited to ruin the Royal Wedding
The Royal Wedding is this Saturday morning, and you either give an enormous shit about the entire enterprise or have no idea what’s going on. Either way, there will probably no better way to experience it than via HBO’s coverage, which will be hosted by Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon as their dopey, pastel-colored morning-news personalities Cord Hosenbeck and Tish Cattigan, who previously hosted The Rose Parade for Amazon Prime to wild viewer dissatisfaction. In anticipation of this, the duo stopped by The Tonight Show to talk about the wedding, and to show off a bit of the comedic repartee that’ll make the whole thing worthwhile even if you’ve been sort of confused about which Prince is even getting married here. (It’s Harry.)
The conversation flies off the rails early and barely touches solid ground thereafter. Cord and Tish are the perfect embodiment of clueless but enthusiastic American Anglophiles, obsessed with ornamentation and babies and baubles. Jimmy Fallon cracks early, which is, you know, par for the course, but even Ferrell eventually loses it when he declares he’s single by choice, adding, “I respect a woman’s choice to not want to go out with me.” (He seems surprised the words even came out of his mouth.) Shannon’s able to keep them both moving as they cycle through the Yanny/Laurel debate (Cord hears the Budweiser frogs) and finally the baby-sized crown and scepter they plan to present to the newborn Prince Louis, assuming they are granted entry to the castle grounds and 15 or 20 minutes to properly present the gift. Shannon even gets a dig in on Fallon, asking him how he managed to perform on Saturday Night Live without laughing. (“They called me the iceman,” he responds.)
Then Cord and Tish launch into a blues song about the couple, which hopefully serves as an indication of just how unhinged their coverage will be this weekend.
The coverage, which also features Tim Meadows, starts on HBO at 7:30 a.m. ET. If you’re waking up early for this shit, at least watch some very funny people take the piss out of it.
