Will Ferrell takes himself out to the ball game in Ferrell Takes The Field
Will Ferrell never met a sport he didn’t want to make a movie out of, but after tackling soccer, auto racing, figure skating, and basketball, the SNL alum is finishing his half-decathlon of sports comedies with an unexpected twist: a documentary.
Ferrell Takes The Field follows the actor’s exploits as he actually plays for ten different Major League teams during this season’s spring training. Produced by Funny Or Die for HBO, Field will simply follow the unlikely 47-year-old rookie as he bounces between one-day stints with ten teams in as many days, full of mock-seriousness and (mostly figurative) winks at the camera.
Besides your entertainment, the stunt was conceived to benefit Stand Up To Cancer and other cancer-related charities. We’re not sure how a middle-aged comedian playing second base for an afternoon actually gets us closer to a cure for cancer, but his heart is in the right place. (We assume it has something to do with awareness).
As for Ferrell’s next move, he has yet to take on football (at least on film), tennis, or lacrosse, so he’s still got a long career ahead of him. We expect Ferrell to re-team with Kevin Hart for Boxing Day just as soon as he finishes wrapping ’80s golf comedy Plaid To The Bone sometime in the next three to five years.
