Will Smith won't be welcoming anyone to anything in the Independence Day sequel

After all of Roland Emmerich’s optimism and after After Earth, Will Smith has told Fox definitively that he wants no part of getting back into another spaceship for an Independence Day sequel, according to Deadline. While no official reason is given, it’s believed it may have something to do with Will Smith’s recently stated credo of not wanting to be “the sequel guy”—unless maybe it’s sequels to Bad Boys or Hancock or I Am Legend, but definitely not Men In Black, since he already did two sequels to that. Anyway, as we previously reported, this will have no effect on Emmerich proceeding with the movie anyway: He simply has to swap his script that had Smith’s character for the one without, where the aliens return and, not receiving a proper welcome, resolve to destroy the Earth for being rude.
