Win a DVD of the indie drama Five Star
When it debuted at Tribeca Film Fest last year, gang drama Five Star impressed with the way it blurred the line between reality and fiction. This was due in large part to its casting of James “Primo” Grant, a real-life member of the Bloods, as a fictionalized version of himself. The film finds Primo taking John, the teenage son of his slain friend, under his wing and teaching him about life on the tough streets of New York. The film had a limited theatrical run earlier this year and will hit shelves on September 1. In anticipation of the film’s release, The A.V. Club is giving away two copies of the film on DVD. For your chance to win, simply send an email to [email protected] with the subject line “Five Star.” Be sure to include your name and mailing address in the body of the email. U.S. entrants only. We’ll select two winners at random from our eligible entries on Thursday, September 3, and notify them via email. Estimated retail value of the prize is $14.99. You can find an official plot synopsis and trailer for the film below.
“A member of the notorious Bloods since he was 12 years old—both in the film and in real life—Primo takes John, the son of his slain mentor, under his wing, versing him in the code of the streets. Set in East New York, Five Star blends documentary and fictional storytelling as director Keith Miller carefully avoids worn clichés of gang culture to offer a compelling portrait of two men forced to confront the question of what it really means to be a man.”
