Everyone’s hopping on the “Mel Gibson is a racist crazy person” trend these days, but Winona Ryder was already onto his early stuff, like, 15 years ago. In an interview with GQ, Ryder relates the first time she ever heard one of Gibson’s hard-bop solos, in an anecdote that’s like the celebrity pariah version of coming across Charlie Parker sweating it out on 52nd Street: “I remember, like, 15 years ago, I was at one of those big Hollywood parties. And he was really drunk. I was with my friend, who's gay. He made a really horrible gay joke. And somehow it came up that I was Jewish. He said something about 'oven dodgers,' but I didn't get it. I'd never heard that before. It was just this weird, weird moment. I was like, 'He's anti-Semitic and he's homophobic.' No one believed me!" Well of course, a wild, innovative phrasing like “oven dodgers” is rarely appreciated in its own time.
