Wokémon is ready for the political revolution
At the heart of the Wokémon Facebook page is a fantastic pun, some solid memes, and a slight misunderstanding of what it means to be “woke.” The term is generally used to indicate that someone has a deep understanding of institutionalized racism/social justice issues. Or it’s sometimes used in a more ironic way to call attention to a particularly absurd conspiracy theory (“stay woke” is basically the cooler cousin of “wake up sheeple”). But while those two ideas play a part in Wokémon, the page puts its focus first and foremost on critiquing capitalism:
It’s basically the new haven for Bernie Sanders supporters, communists, nihilists, and Anonymous devotees. And it’s produced some pretty solid Pokémon memes:
All of this would surely please Oliver Stone, who is thoroughly convinced that Pokémon Go is laying the groundwork for a totalitarian state. And, to be fair, the page is also promoting some more traditional “woke” topics as well, proving the Wokémon revolution is truly for all:
Wokémon released a post noting, “Guest posts are welcome, and dank ones will be promoted to the front page.” Those who want to seize the means of production and/or check out some “dank memes” can stay Wokémon over on Facebook.
