Woman accidentally captures the existential ennui of Pokémon Go

We have made it through what feels like year eight of the Pokémon Go generation (in reality, it’s only been a few days), and now the backlash is starting to set in. The game is simply too omnipresent not to aggravate some people, especially if they have an old-fashioned issue with folks walking down the street and looking at their phones, as if that’s not a thing teenagers have been doing since texting was invented. However, the problem with hating Pokémon Go is that it’s simply too damn delightful and accessible. Anybody can get into the game, whether they really want to or not.

That’s what a woman named Kristen Tuff Scott learned when she got sick of people coming into the place where she works just so they could catch Pokémon. As Uproxx explains, she tried to solve that problem by downloading the game herself and catching all of the monsters she could, theoretically cleaning out her workplace before any more trainers could swoop in and bother her. Of course, that’s not how the game works, and in the process of catching Pokémon for spite, she got kind of hooked on it.

Scott posted a video on YouTube about all of this, and though she seems to have accepted the joy of Pokémon Go into her life, she’s definitely not happy about it. She says the whole experience is making her feel “like a nerd,” and she notes that she “drove across the parking lot to get a rat-lookin’ sumbitch” just before making the video. In the end, it’s like Friedrich Nietzsche said: “He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not start trying to capture monsters.” (Or something like that.)
