Women writing women dating women is not just for women

The ubiquity of webseries makes it difficult to determine where one’s time is best spent, but today Sidetrack premiered, making that decision a lot easier. The 10-episode series, written by TV Club contributor Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya, follows LBGTQ women living in New York City, offering a diverse cast and an engaging look at modern relationships. (It’s a perfect follow-up if you’ve already binged your way through Master Of None on Netflix.)

The series is an enjoyable romp, offering plenty of laughs and relatable moments seen through the lens of the lesbian experience. There is a smartly observed naturalism to the writing, full of wry humor and a few winking asides to its forebearer, Showtime’s seminal The L Word. The direction hews closer to the artistic single-camera cinematography of shows like FX’s Louie. The entire run of Sidetrack, co-created by Kirsten Ariel Bledsoe, Celina Vicioso, and Kumari Upadhyaya, and directed by Bledsoe, is currently available on YouTube.
