Wu-Tang Clan form like Voltron on NPR’s Tiny Desk
In honor of the 25th anniversary of the group’s seminal debut album Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), somebody at NPR turned on the giant W-shaped spotlight on the roof, signaling the Wu-Tang Clan to assemble like a veritable hip-hop Justice League for the latest installment of the “Tiny Desk” series. While some members of the group (Method Man and Ghostface Killah) are noticeably absent, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, and Cappadonna are in full effect, trading verses throughout the 20-minute medley.
The group’s de facto leader, RZA, doubles as DJ for the set but eventually joins in, dropping a verse from the track “DuckSeazon” off the album Wu-Tang Forever. But times have changed since 1997 and RZA consciously omits some lyrics, before admitting that they don’t hold up in the #MeToo era. While each member attacks their verses with the ferocity of their younger selves, this is still maybe the most casual and laidback Wu-Tang concert you’ll ever see. Even when Young Dirty Bastard (son of original member ODB) jumps on the mic and starts flailing around with a bit of his father’s chaotic energy, it’s still like you’re hanging out in someone’s living room watching a group of old friends rap for fun.
