Wyclef Jean mistakenly handcuffed by LAPD
In a news story that, depressingly, barely qualifies as news these days, Buzzfeed reports that musician Wyclef Jean was handcuffed by the LAPD last night, on the grounds that he “matched the description” of a person being sought in connection with an armed robbery. According to the LAPD, Jean—who’d just left the studio after working with rapper T-Baby—matched several characteristics of the man who allegedly robbed a nearby gas station, including “wearing a red bandana” and being in the front seat of a vehicle that was similar to one the robber was driving. Also, he’s black, not that anybody was saying that part out loud.
Someone with Jean videotaped the incident, which you can see above. In it, you can hear the singer laying out what’s happening. In an Instagram video of a different point in the altercation, he calmly notes “Just so you all know, I am going to sue you.”
Jean was released a few minutes later, after more police arrived and informed the officers that they were arresting the wrong man.
