X-Men: Dark Phoenix joins New Mutants in being pushed back to 2019
Recently, there was a monolith on Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. with the power to launch people forward in time. It looks like 20th Century Fox decided to use that same ability on its mutant properties, because the next X-Men movie was just delayed until 2019.
Deadline reports the studio is reshuffling the release dates for a number of its upcoming films, with the mutant superheroes merely the most high-profile of the offerings getting moved around the calendar. X-Men: Dark Phoenix has been removed from its previous release date of November 2 and pushed back until Feburary 14, 2019. Unfortunately, the studio is unable to also travel back in time and remove X-Men: The Last Stand—the previous attempt at telling a (very distorted) version of the Dark Phoenix story—from its calendar altogether. In the process, Fox also figured it may as well go ahead and push back New Mutants again as well, given it already delayed the release by nearly a year. That horror-themed superhero film will now come out August 2, 2019.
Taking over the November 2 opening will be Bohemian Rhapsody, which apparently weathered firing its director well enough to have its release date moved up nearly two months. So 2018 won’t be a great time for opportunities to see Marvel’s mutants kick some ass, but it will be a banner year to see Rami Malek lip-synch “Another One Bites The Dust.”
