After director Kevin Tancharoen took the bold step of creating his own Mortal Kombat movie trailer without the approval of Warner Games—gleefully reaching in and ripping out the property’s spine, in a legal sense—he nevertheless managed to spark enough viral interest that Warner gave him the go-ahead to turn it into a 10-episode web series. Now Tancharoen has been encouraged to execute the finishing move of a full-fledged, live-action Mortal Kombat reboot that’s due in 2013, with Tancharoen essentially pulling out the franchise’s heart and holding it aloft in triumph, in metaphorical business terms. Tancharoen—whose previous experience with fatalities included the duds Fame and Glee: The 3-D Concert Movie, films that gouged out the eyes and smashed in frontal lobes, in an aesthetic connotation—will attempt to prove himself capable of taking Mortal Kombat back to the big screen for the first time in over 15 years. He'll do so, he told the L.A. Times, with a script from writing partner Oren Uziel that Tancharoen claimed will be "more realistic" than previous versions—basically decapitating fans with a surge of electricity, which we mean literally.
