Yorgos Lanthimos' festival darling The Favourite gets a bloody, hysterical new trailer
“As it turns out, I am capable of much unpleasantness,” Emma Stone’s Abigail says in the new trailer for Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite. One can also imagine these words coming out of the mouth of Lanthimos, who’s given us some of modern cinema’s most indelibly grotesque visuals in arthouse provocations like Dogtooth, The Lobster, and The Killing Of A Sacred Deer. His new film The Favourite, which is currently drawing raves at the Venice Film Festival, will no doubt deliver its fair share of blood, but it also looks to be the director’s most hilarious yet, with stars Stone, Olivia Colman, and Rachel Weisz in a mode of hysterical lunacy.
Set in early 18th century England, the film centers around servant Abigail, a one-time aristocrat who uses her lowly status as a means to endear herself to a frail Queen Anne (Colman) and Lady Sarah (Weisz), the woman running the throne in her stead. The language is coarse, the action bawdy, and the performances fearless in this new footage, cementing it as a funhouse mirror reflection of another upcoming story of royal power struggles, Mary Queen Of Scots.
The Favourite will be released theatrically November 23, 2018.
