You bet Emma Thompson wore a pair of sneakers to her damehood ceremony

There are a handful of British people who must be protected at all costs. Emma Thompson is one who ranks high on that list, especially after today. The actress, screenwriter and activist is no longer just Emma Thompson. Henceforth, the two-time Oscar winner shall only be referred to as Dame Emma Thompson.

The actress, who most recently brought Mrs. Potts to life in the otherwise forgettable live-action Beauty And The Beast, became a dame on Wednesday, according to BBC News. The 59-year-old star was honored by Prince William at Buckingham Palace, alongside her husband and two kids. Now, it’s a pretty big deal to be receive such an accolade, which leads to one pressing question: what the heck do you wear to such a prestigious ceremony?

Some have gone the classic route, like Dame Angela Lansbury, who in 2014 wore a simple yet elegant navy dress with a feathered hat. Then there’s Dame Joan Collins, who went a little more dramatic with a white caped jacket and black veil. But Thompson? She’s the type of woman who always looks good, but won’t compromise comfort for anyone’s dress code, royal or not. She opted for a teal Stella McCartney suit with an equal-pay pin and a pair of white sneakers. Yes, sneakers, inside Buckingham freaking Palace!

As if further evidence were needed to prove Thompson isn’t like a regular mom, but a cool mom, she almost tried to kiss the prince during the ceremony. “I love Prince William. I’ve known him since he was little, and we just sniggered at each other,” she told the Associated Press. “I said, ‘I can’t kiss you, can I?’ And he said, ‘No, don’t’!”

Afterward, seemingly drunk on wine, she sang a little tune about nightmares – a lyric from a song by the English band Easy Life.

Thompson deserves the honorific alone for giving zero fucks about snobby royal traditions. Actually, just skip the damehood; make her queen already.
