Having previously breathed life into inanimate objects with their screenplay for Toy Story, Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow have strongly hinted in an interview with IGN that they are in talks to do the same for FarmVille, the Facebook game in which your parents sit immobile for hours, competing to see how much of their cursed time left on earth they can kill by looking after pretend cows. Cohen and Sokolow—whose screen credits also include Cheaper By The Dozen and two Garfield films, so what does it matter, really—say they’re currently “in conversations” with FarmVille manufacturer Zynga about working with “one of their brands,” though they played coy by adding, “Can’t really say too much on that front yet, but ‘Old MacDonald’ didn’t have a factory, if you get our drift.”
While they were far too busy high-fiving and declaring, “Snap!” to elaborate, it’s fairly obvious what they’re talking about: Zynga has already begun developing Mafia Wars elsewhere, and stuff like Rovio's Angry Birds: The Movie is already in the works, and so a film based on a Flash game about simulated farming is officially what we’ve come to in terms of storytelling—much as our agricultural industry has withered as able-bodied Americans reject all forms of physical labor in favor of spending hours fake-tending fake crops. No word on plot details, obviously, but we imagine it’ll be like Places In The Heart with less racism and more magic eggs.
