You know what they say: A Reddit thread about whether or not it’s Friday the 13th is right twice a year

For some, today’s date marks the unluckiest of days, a terrifying commingling of date and weekday that portends terrible things. But for one small, passionate community on Reddit, this is a day for celebration. That’s because today is one of the two times this year that the subreddit r/IsTodayFridayThe13th can proudly and confidently proclaim, “Yes.” The subreddit, which started about a year ago and currently has over 13,000 subscribers, consists solely of daily threads stating in one word whether or not that particular day is Friday the 13th. One part novelty and one part extreme commitment to a bit, r/IsTodayFridayThe13th is the exact kind of dumb thing that makes Reddit what it is.

While today’s thread is filled with nothing but joy, the previous days’ threads contain some fairly palpable disappointment. Every day, users come to the subreddit hoping beyond hope that that day (even if it’s a Tuesday) could in fact be Friday the 13th. They are often dismayed to discover it is not. Even yesterday, when the big event was so close at hand, some users began to doubt whether it was ever going to come.

But, early this morning, when moderator GangControl posted the official thread declaring that this Friday did, in fact, fall on the 13th of the month, the users in attendance responded with the kind of overflowing exuberance we’ve come to expect from internet forums:

The thread has been among the top posts on the site all day. There are some who say the next Friday the 13th will come about sometime in July. But, truly, there can be no way to predict these types of things. The only way to know for sure is to check the subreddit everyday. Who knows, it could be tomorrow!
