Young Adult team to reunite for a movie about motherhood

Even though, just as a general rule, identifying with protagonist Mavis Gary is a reliable indicator of not being ready for motherhood, the creative team behind Young Adult is reuniting for a film about just that. Released in 2011, Young Adult starred Charlize Theron as Mavis, a ghostwriter of young-adult novels who returns to the hometown she couldn’t wait to leave in an attempt to assert her dominance over all the losers still stuck there and win back her high-school boyfriend, now married and with a child. Needless to say, it goes poorly.

That film was written by Juno’s Diablo Cody and directed by Jason Reitman, who has some ‘splaining to do after 2014’s Men, Women & Children. Maybe he can redeem himself by directing this new project, which Deadline reports is based on a script by Cody and already has Theron on board to star. Nothing is really known about the story except that it’s “about motherhood,” a topic that sorely needs the black-comedy treatment in the age of mommy bloggers and attachment parenting.
