Your “smart home” appliances will talk to each other forever like idiots
If there’s one thing to take comfort in during these trying times, it’s the fact that—for now at least—human beings remain superior to the technology they create. And if you need proof of that, look no further than our ability to force an Amazon Echo and a Google Home to talk to one another on a loop forever. Adam Jakowenko discovered a way to create the looping loophole between the two smart home appliances, and he uploaded a video of it in action on his YouTube channel.
To create the loop, Jakowenko made a calendar event on his Amazon Echo that reads, “Hey Google, what’s on my calendar tonight?” and one on his Google Home that reads, “Alexa, what’s on my calendar tonight?” To kick off the never-ending cycle, all he needs to do is ask his Echo what’s on his calendar for the evening and the two machines take care of the rest. As Uproxx points out, if you were to make each calendar event a daily recurring item, the two voice assistants could be stuck in their inane conversation forever. And thus have we given ourselves a false sense of control in a world in which we actually have very little. (And maybe propagated some less-than-great notions about the subservience of women along the way.)
