So, yes: This teaser, with its fleeting, brutal imagery, is pretty gnarly and intense for its length. Set to a booming techno score by Hans Zimmer, Steven Doar, and Omer Benyamin—all of whom have composed for Snyder, with the latter two having worked on his canceled Twilight of the Gods animated series for Netflix—unquestionably Snyderian images flicker across the screen. What we see: A ring-light setup in a dark room as a butterfly flutters through it; a shirtless, muddied Stuart Martin (Rebel Moon) enters the frame looking like Kurtz from Apocalypse Now!; a close-up of Fra Fee (also Rebel Moon), looking like Jon Snow fretting about his queen; someone gripping a rosary as a fire burns just out of view; a head exploding. Amid this fracas, easily the most disturbing shot in the teaser: a dog that’s met its decidedly NSFW demise. It’s all very extra, in that pure, uncut Snyder fashion, and if the violence onscreen somehow didn’t guarantee an R-rating, Anne Hathaway should rest assured that that final bit certainly clinches it.
The Last Photograph has been on Snyder’s back burner for years. It was originally planned as a follow-up to Justice League, with Sean Penn and Christian Bale set to star, but a family tragedy derailed those plans and sent the director on a different path. In the years since, Snyder kept busy at Netflix, producing series and movies meant to spawn enduring franchises—Twilight Of The Gods, Army Of The Dead and Rebel Moon—all of which have either been set aside or canceled by the streamer, making Snyder something of a mercenary at this point in his career. As such, there are currently no studios or distributors attached to The Last Photograph, nor is there a release date, leaving Snyder devotees waiting with bated breath for the film’s next update—just the way he likes it, no doubt.
